Q&A with Ms Satterwhite & Ms Castillo:
Covid related:
• Option A students seem to be ok. People feel differently about Canvas and they’re working on improving the experience
• Option B is harder than some students thought. There are a few students who transferred from Option B to Option A because it wasn’t what they had expected.
• Back to campus plan – decision is made by the superintendent and board members. It is all about how to handle the transition. E.g. it’s hard to have 3 kids walking together down the corridor and be able to stay 6 feet apart. Most classrooms can hold only 11 students, etc.
• Some students in sports are on campus, but we have to stop 2 groups because some of the cohorts got tested positive
• Can families be informed when there are positive cases? There is a brand new rule from the county today. There are HIPPA Rules about how much we can tell.
Academics:
• There will be no AMC10, no ACT.
• No PSAT in October. Will wait and see if it’s possible next semester. If ever, probably Saturday. Priority will be given to junior because that’s the year where PSAT really counts.
• California Scholarship Federation(CSF) is open and student can apply after their first semester of grades. Ms Rodriquez handles it. Deadline is this week.
• National honor society is by invitation only – usually end of sophomore, beginning of junior.
Clubs:
• Clubs are the best way for students to connect with each other.
• There are 90 clubs at LAHS (http://lahsasb.org/CLUBS ). If you don’t like the clubs we have, go ahead and create your own club, all it takes it 2 other students, and find an advisor (any teacher, or Ms Satterwhite or Ms Castillo can be a club advisor). Clubs can be as casual as a club for students to have hot chocolates together while doing homework.
• There is a website that will match your interest with the club:
Teachers’ Office hour
• Students can go with a friend. A way to create a relationship with the teacher and also get the help students need.
• Parents can also setup 1:1 with teacher, through teacher parent conference: https://lahs.mvla.net/ParentsStudents/Request-a-Parent-Teacher-Conference/ .
Mental Health & Wellbeing:
• Students can reach out for support.
• Some students who did not do well in online classes got “No Credit” in the Spring. They were auto-enrolled in summer school, but many did not attend as it was also online. This year the school is trying to get them to catchup, but it is hard because some of them already has rigorous workload. There are plans to bring some of them to the classroom as they aren’t successful with online classes. The highest priority is for the seniors this year to make up and meet graduation requirements
