Summary:

  • Academic Counseling:

    • Last year school approved a new counseling model (see slide). Balance is key.

  • College & Career Services:

    • Every year there are 200+ colleges signed up. They are posted at Naviance. Students can sign up.

    • There are MANY scholarships available this year. Students are receiving notifications.

  • College Advising:

    • Freshman and Sophomores can follow the “freshman checklist” and “Sophomore checklist” in the slide deck.

    • Special note on financial aid: “FAFSA” asks for basic generic financial information with parents’ taxes, while “CSS Profile” is only for private school, and is looking for what other assets the parents have.

  • Student Services & Wellness:

    • School-based mental health support is all telehealth this year.

    • For referral, please note the “Referral form” is important. E.g. Parents/students can indicate their preference for therapist (e.g. some students prefer or do not do well with therapist of a specific gender). Per regulations, intake therapist cannot contact the student unless their cell phone numbers are on the form. Therefore, if appropriate, put down the phone number so therapist can reach out. If numbers aren’t there, Ms. Castillo will have to contact the parents to get that information, which means taking extra 2-3 days for therapists to reach out.

    • There are many LAHS kids who are extremely smart. There has also been many “best of the bests” having breakdown and lose control of their lives and emotions. There is so much stress and no way to talk to people. Balance is key.

  • Conclusion

    • Visit the College & Career Center website. Check out the calendar. https://sites.google.com/mvla.net/lahsccc/home?authuser=0

    • Reach out to our Counselors and Advisors - they have office hours.

Q&A

Naviance

  • 9th graders usually register on PSAT days. This year it will happen later, detail to be announced.

  • New this year – students no longer need to worry about remembering a different set of user name / password. They now can use single-sign on with their MVLA login.

How does the Naviance system benefit the 10th graders?

  • The career assessment can be helpful. It allows students to explore what they want to study, and which colleges offer those majors.

Do parents have access to Naviance as students?

  • Yes, parents can obtain access. Send email to Laura Duran Laura.duran@mvla.net and parents account will be activated.

Graduation requirements – how do you count classes taken outside of MVLA – by units, or by year (Community College classes are shorter)?

  • Students are not allowed to take English or social science courses outside of MVLA

  • Math & science – students can take outside.

College Advisor appointment - Juniors and Seniors are getting appointment request from Ms. Price:

  • There are still many appointments available in October. Click on the link in the email to sign-up.

  • If schedule is full, just email Ms. Price. There are walk-in appointments available too.\

How many colleges on average do students apply to?

  • As many UC’s and USC’s as student can

  • Outside, most students can handle 8-10.

College freshman status - How many classes can a student take at community college before he/she is considered a transfer student rather than freshman?

  • 60 community college units will count out of freshman

Does College Now count as “classes outside of MVLA”?

  • Yes and No. “College Now” are theoretically outside of MVLA. Students are still getting their graduation diploma from MVLA, however they are college students. They even have a different counselor (Henry). It’s just like high school kids doing college. Some students even get their AA when they get their high school diploma. Some people think Foothill is easy. Foothill is actually a very demanding college. Some kids do well, some come back to LAHS after a few months.

Grades - What’s the difference between Quarter grade vs. Semester grade?

  • Quarter grade = progress in class so far. Semester grade is what actually appears in transcript.

When is PSAT this year?

  • There will be no college board testing in 2020. Next test date is January, but it depends on when we’re going back to campus. If campus is still closed we will not have the test.

  • Parents please do not fly to Idaho or other places to take the test, this is not worth it. Many colleges are test optional. Focus on essays, recommendation letters, etc.
